1. What made you want to become a therapist?
I feel like I have a bit of an unorthodox story of becoming a therapist. It's not exactly what I set out to do. When I was first out of college I worked in residence life for a university, while working for the university I had the opportunity to take masters classes. The way these classes were structured meant my only real option was to take Masters in Counseling courses. While taking these courses I became more and more fascinated with how the mind works and how healing can take place through relationships. The more I learned, the more I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I am a big believer in things work out the way they are supposed to, so though I did not set out to be a therapist, I am so honored to get to walk along side people as they heal.
2. What types of clients have you worked with so far in your career?
I primarily have worked with children, teens, young adults, and families. So ultimately I have worked with nearly every age group as families come in all shapes and sizes.
3. What areas of mental health are you passionate about?
I could probably list about 20 things, but for the sake of brevity, mindfulness! The act of being fully present and fully aware is so counter-cultural to our society. We live in a world that tells us to do more, multitask, blah blah blah. But when we allow our brain and our body to be fully present with itself and the world, so much good happens. We are better able to regulate emotions, handle stressful situations, and be there for those we love.
4. How do you practice your own self care?
After that last question it is probably not hard to guess that one way I practice self care by mindfulness and meditation, which I try to do multiple times a week. I also love to take my dog hiking, be on the water kayaking or paddle boarding, and I probably watch too much TV.
5. What’s the most rewarding thing about being a therapist?
It is one the biggest honors of my life to walk with people through difficult situations and be a witness to their healing.
6. What do you want your clients to know about working with you?
I take a very collaborative approach to therapy, I may be the expert on counseling theories, but you are the expert on you and I want to honor that. Therapy is a very intimate experience and I don't take that lightly. I hope any client working with me would feel validated, respected, and, at times, challenged by me.
